Coast to Coast, Three Daughters, Birthdays and Grandkids

2456 miles by car, another 3200 by air and we did a north to south and nearly coast to coast excursion to celebrate birthdays, share grandchildren, visit daughters and deliver a Jeep. It included two rounds of trick or treating, replacing car batteries, locking keys in the car, driving on remote sections of Route 66, finding TJ Maxx stores across the country, seeing sun rises and sunsets, gambling and a fair amount of fun.

We promised daughter Erin that we'd drive her Jeep to her if she decided to stay in San Diego after leaving her nanny job in South Carolina. It worked out that we could take LeighAnne and baby Mateo for a quick birthday weekend (Leigh's) visit to sister Maeve's family. Rose's birthday on November 1 had us delivering Leigh and Mateo to Charlotte for their return flight to MI and begin our cross country trek with Abigail (we named Erin's Jeep).

We met Erin and friend Mike in Las Vegas for a weekend and Rose and Bob spent the rest of the week checking out Vegas. Photos and highlights follow.

Mikey dressed as a knight for downtown Plymouth trick or treating.

The Denja crew poses in downtown Plymouth park.

The Denja boys got a little trampoline action going.

We visited Spiritus Sanctus school for their All Saints festival

The Redmond girls (minus Erin) in Lexington, SC.

Maeve and Aaron practiced having two children in the family...due date December 7.

We went to the Columbia Riverbanks Zoo to celebrate Halloween with Kendall.

A friendly lizard let them pose.

Roasted marshmallows tasted pretty good at the zoo.

Lots of displays made for fun for the kids.

Grandma Rose gets a birthday ice cream cake.

Kendall thought the cake was pretty good!

LieghAnne, baby Mateo and Kendall.

A third of the way into our cross country trek and a beautiful sunset in Oklahoma.

Bales of cotton the size of semi trailers in Texas.

We followed much of Route 66. One of Bob's goals got checked off.

On the west side of Las Vegas is a beautiful park called Red Rocks. Enlarge the photo and see if you can find the person in white.

"Whew, are we going to go the whole way up?"

"What! This is Vegas? We thought there were lots of shiny buildings?!"

"Yay, I won a dollar!"

Rose, Erin and Mike pose with the lights.

Time for Erin and Mike to head to San Diego with Abigail.

One of the elaborate bus stops on the south Las Vegas Blvd bus route.

A highlight of the trip for Bob was the visit to Hoover Dam.

Enlarge the photo and check out the white line of rock. That is the high water mark in 1983-84.

The new bridge spanning the gorge to permit faster traffic and safety for the dam.

A great bronze work catches the spirit of the workers as well as the original pully/tram system and the newly finished bridge.

The dark top on the island on the right shows the loss of water on Lake Mead since the 1980's high water and last two decade drought. The marina would have been totally submerged.

A little bit of the Strip.

We caught the Bellagio water show.

South Point casino hotel was right across the street from our timeshare.

A flight from Vegas to Detroit and a "Turkey Trot" the next morning at a metropark near Dexter.

LeighAnne and two friends did the 5k walk.

The last day in Plymouth...desert and holding grandson Mateo...happiness embodied.
