Rose's Raucous Rangers...a.k.a. the Hiverants

Since 1982 Rose and some of her friends have gathered once or twice a year to get together. In the old days it was for exercise and friendship. In those days they would downhill ski or cross country ski quite a bit. At first they did this in the winter only but after a few years they added a fall golf outing. Over the years the physical exercise subsided and some shopping crept in. Always it was a bit of a ladies' pajama party, too. The late nights of games, laughter and a bit of hooch in the earlier years have gradually given way to earlier nights, a bit less hooch but just as much laughter.

One of the group, Joleen Clark, had a husband who was quite the canoeist, wood carver and a bit of a historian. He suggested a canoe trip one fall instead of golf and they did it. Joleen's husband, Hugh, decided to carve figures for each of the ladies in attendance and named the group the Hiverants. Hiverants were French explorers in early Michigan/Canadian history who explored the area by canoe. The name stuck. For twenty years Joleen was an active part of the group and Hugh carved new figures for all the ladies on each of the gatherings. Sadly, Joleen passed away a few years ago and the group struggled a bit to get together. A combination of distance, growing families, and busy lives caused part of the struggle, too.

A year or so had passed since the last gathering and Rose felt it was time to gather them together again. The photos that follow are of the latest gathering of the Hiverants. A good time was had by all, the weather cooperated and they even did some skiing and snowshoeing!

Katie, are you resting or glad that you have snowshoes instead of skis so you did not go in the water?
