Snowshoe Fun

Super Bowl Sunday and Monday after we did some snowshoeing with folks from Coldwater. Eight couples from Coldwater came up to Traverse to stay for several days and they called us. One of the couples, Terry and Rita Klavinski from Rose Lake between Bronson and Coldwater, asked if we knew some spots to snowshoe.
Sunday we went to Yuba Township park just a couple miles down the highway from our house. We trekked about 2 miles and found a geocache, saw an eagle's nest and checked out the Yuba creek and some beaver cuttings. Then we went just a couple miles more north and checked out Maple Bay Township Park. We had gone there in the summer with our grandkids and their parents Leigh & Mike Denja. One drives through a field for about a quarter mile and then hike down the old shoreline of Grand Traverse Bay of several thousand years ago. We travel through a nice forest of large cedar trees and old growth maple and beech trees. After about a quarter mile we came to the bay. We hiked along the shore about 3/4 mile and saw an eagel sitting in the top of a large tree. It took off when we got within a couple hundred yards. An overcast day but mild temps and very little wind.
That evening we joined the folks and saw the Super Bowl. The Saturday before Rose and I made pasties. We have done so every year since about 1979 when we were in Harbor Beach and joined several teacher and administrator friends who were from the U.P.
Then on Monday we met with Klavinskis again and went to the Old State Home just west of downtown Traverse City. They have several miles of trails cut into the woods in the hills behind the old hospital grounds. We did about 3 miles, located the site of another geocache but did not find the container with all the snow cover. After snowshoeing we visited one of the old hospital buildings that are slowly being converted to condos and various professional, retail and food shops. We stopped at Left Foot Charleys wine tasting room and then to the Underground Cheesecake Shoppe. The last stop was at Sleder's Tavern for sandwich and a brew.
All in all a great weekend with good exercise and a chance to catch up with acquaintences.
Rose is ready to go at Yuba.

OK, you have to click on this picture and enlarge it and then barely can see the eagle in flight to the left of the large dead tree.
Preparing to make the hike on paths behind the old state home

This would make a great climbing tree for our grandchildren
