Ash Wednesday began with church and then we went snowshoeing. We're continuing to check out the hills behind the old state home in Traverse City. Lots of trails are cut through the hills and we were surprised to see how well traveled they are. This is near the top of a long steady incline with an elevation change of about 400 feet. Rose was taking a rest.
As we said, these hills are behind the old state home. In days gone by they housed mentally and physically ill children and adults and were large almost self-contained operations. Most around the state operated their own farms to feed the "inmates." We were surprised to see this headstone marking a world champion milk cow.

I've got to say, that is one of the most interesting headstones I have ever seen.
I'm so jealous of your outdoor activity! can't wait for next weekend to see some of those sights and wear some snow shoes myself!
