Edisto Island is located between Charleston and Hilton Head, SC. We stayed there for our next to last week in the south. It is very much like an expensive Drummond Island, MI in that the atmosphere is very laid back and there is not a lot of commercial activity. Housing is very expensive and the island is a network of roads following high ground with houses located on the estuaries in between...many very expensive houses. We stayed at the Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort in the Marsh Point units. The first photo shows our place on the top floor. The place is in desperate need of renovation!
We found out why traveling in January and February is cheap...everything is closed for the season, or for repair or just because there aren't enough tourists! But, we had a great time anyway since we could be with friends and family.
We took three days to drive back to Michigan with a stop in Chattanooga, TN where we hoped to do some walking and site-seeing. But, once again things were closed for maintenance! It still is a very cool downtown area. The road conditions were amazingly good during the 4,850 miles that we traveled with only a couple partial days of bad driving weather. Pretty darn fortunate as we dodged the terrible snowstorms that hit the mid-Atlantic region twice while we were south.

This is Highway 174 to Edisto Island. It was the very first morning on the island and they got the first accumulation of snow in 30 years! Lucky us...I drove to Charleston to pick up Grandma Alice from the airport and she stayed with us for the week.

We ate a lot! Eating turned into one of our events with everything else closed on the island. This place was great in terms of food but looked a little strange nestled in the same building as a fairly run down gas station. Maeve and Aaron's friend, Scott, actually moved to Edisto Island to work here then moved to Columbia, SC to start up another Po Pigs...it did not work out so well but Scott, wife Meghan and kids settled in and became good friends with Maeve and Aaron.

The pool was enclosed and across the road from our unit. Erin and Kendall braved the cold one time to take a little dip.

We caught the sunrise, too, on this our last morning on Edisto Island. There were several dolphins swimming in the area but I could not get a good shot of them.
