Springtime in Traverse City

Northern Michigan has been cool and generally dry this year but Mother Nature does march on. I burned the wild flower patch per suggestions since this is the fourth summer approaching. The experts suggest burning every three years so I tried it. It looked pretty bad after burning and I wondered if things would really come back.
Our back yard has been full of a great variety of birds this past week. We've seen gold finches, swallows are nesting in our woods, red capped house wrens, the ever present blue jays, cardinals, grosbeaks, bald eagles, pilated woodpeckers, various sparrows--blackbirds--starlings and finally the oriole showed up. We saw all these yesterday alone. It's nice to see them back.

The day of the burn

Ten days after the burn...growth is indeed coming back.

Booger is checking things out. The swallows did a little dive bombing since their nest is just a few yards away.

I think the wildflower garden is going to be the best yet! Very sorry to hear about Shirley too.
